BLK, the largest dating app made for Black singles, has partnered with Hip Hop legends Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, and “the mother of southern gangster rap” Mia X, turning the iconic rap classic “Back That Thang Up” into the new vaccine anthem, “Vax That Thang Up.”
The message is clear: dating is better in all the ways once you’re vaccinated.
“I just wanted to do something positive for my people and to stand in the front to show that I’m willing to sacrifice my life not just for me, but also for my family,” Juvenile said. “We don’t know what we’re facing right now, but we really do all need to be vaccinated so we can continue to do our thing and survive.”
This is the first official collaboration between former Cash Money Records artists and No Limit Records Matriarch. The original recording “Back That Thang Up,” is performed by Juvenile and Mannie Fresh, who were featured on the 1998 track. The Pro Vaccine remix features Mama Mia X, known throughout the music industry as “the mother of Southern gangster rap.”
“We have a direct line to the audience that needs to internalize this message,” BLK Head of Brand & Marketing Jonathan Kirkland said. “The song may be playful and fun, but the underlying message is as real as it gets.”
The Song urges listeners to get vaccinated before hooking up with “some dude named Scott.” The music video has that Naturally N’awlins bounce flow with a vital message: ”Go, go, go, go get the shot!”
Since the start of the pandemic, Black communities were hit the hardest. Add that to the low vaccine rates currently being documented and People of color are making up most of the recent Covid-19 cases across the United States.
Black adults under age 40 are the most likely group to avoid the Covid-19 vaccination, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Distrust of doctors and government, less access to vaccination centers, and online misinformation each play a role. We hope this video is both entertaining and actionable.
