Emmy Winning Film Producer Lena Waithe and Alana Mayo have announced that they are ending their marriage.
“After careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways,” the couple said in the joint statement first announced by E! News. “We have nothing but support for one another and ask that you respect our privacy during this time.”
In November of last year, Lena told daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and John Legend that she and Mayo were married in a private ceremony at a San Francisco courthouse.
“We didn’t make any announcements or a big… We went to San Francisco. We went to the courthouse,” Lena explained at the time. “Got married right in front of [late gay rights activist and politician] Harvey Milk’s bust.”
Lena revealed that she and Mayo made a very spontaneous decision to get married at the courthouse. However, it was Alana’s initial idea “as all good things are.”
“And she was just driving and she saw the courthouse and she said, ‘We should get married there,’” Lena told Ellen. “And I said, ‘Cool, I’m down.’ ”
“It really was a humbling day to marry someone so amazing, but also to really appreciate all the work that so many people have put in for us to be able to do that, so it was good,” Waithe expressed. (by Loren Fouroux)
