The single barrel D’Ussé 1969 Anniversaire Cognac was gifted to Jay Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, for his birthday, which was yesterday (4 December). The rapper will distribute the 50 of decanters to friends and family, before a limited run of the Cognac is made available for the public to purchase for US$5,000 in 2020.
Made using eaux-de-vie from 100% Grande Champagne grapes, the limited edition Cognac has been aged in the cellars of Château de Cognac.
Cellar master Michel Casavecchia said: “Its aromas have now developed into an exquisite eaux-de-vie from the Château de Cognac, with characteristics unique to this exceptional batch.
“The colour is bright gold with shiny reflections. The nose brings rich aromas of fresh walnut, hazelnut and candied apple. Upon first sip, it reveals a distinct potency with powerful, woody notes and a long stewed fruit finish, with a touch of leather and cigar box.”
According to the brand, Jay Z previously travelled to Château de Cognac to sample aged Cognacs with cellar master Casavecchia. The pair sampled the liquid at that time and agreed to save the Cognac to bottle for a special occasion.
Global brand ambassador Sullivan Doh said: “The inimitable liquid of D’Ussé 1969 Anniversaire showcases how the centuries-old traditions of the house continue to stand the test of time.
“Once the barrel is emptied and bottled, there is no way to ever make this exact liquid again – and that is something we felt was worthy of honouring such a cultural icon.” (Courtesy of The Spirits Business)
