Prodigy’s Funeral Service Is Opened To The Public

The many admirers of late hip hop icon Prodigy will get the chance to say goodbye to the rapper at a public memorial Thursday.

A visitation will be open to the public from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. during Prodigy’s funeral service at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel in New York City.

A private service will also take place at the funeral home this afternoon, with fellow rap heavyweights Nas, Ice-T, Lil Kim and Prodigy’s longtime Mobb Deep partner Havoc among those expected to attend, according to TMZ.

Prodigy, whose real name was Albert Johnson, died on June 20 at the age of 42 after being taken to the hospital a few days earlier due to complications stemming from his sickle cell anemia.

He died in a Las Vegas hospital after performing in the Nevada city shortly before he was hospitalized.

The acclaimed artist rose to fame in the early 1990s after creating Mobb Deep with Havoc in Queens. The duo released eight studio albums together, including their seminal work “The Infamous” in 1995 and the comparably successful “Hell of Earth” a year later.

Havoc paid tribute to Prodigy on Sunday with a touching message at the BET Awards.

For over 20 years, he and I went through it all and seen it all. I’m going to miss my dude,” he told the crowd. “This loss is painful. But the lyrical legacy he left us will impact the culture forever. Rest in peace, Prodigy. My brother.”
