Cardi B announces split from Offset a year after marriage: ‘I guess we grew out of love’

Rapper Cardi B has announced she is separating from her husband, the rapper Offset.

Cardi made the announcement to her 36.5 million followers on Instagram early Wednesday morning. She said she had been trying to work things out with the Migos rapper for a while. They had been married for a little more than a year.

“We’re really good friends and, you know, we’re really good business partners and, you know, he’s always somebody that I run to to talk to and we got a lot of love for each other, but things just haven’t been working out between us for a long time and it’s nobody’s fault,” Cardi, 26, said in the post. “It’s just like, I guess we grew out of love, but we’re not together anymore.”

The hip-hop power couple, whose relationship made headlines in 2017 as Cardi first exploded onto the scene with her mega hit song “Bodak Yellow,” made their union official in September of 2017. But their marriage was a secret until June of this year, which was after Cardi gave birth to their daughter, Kulture Kiari, in April. In October of 2017, Offset “proposed” to Cardi onstage at a concert in Philadelphia.

Cardi, born Belcalis Almanzar, hails from the Bronx and has a home in Edgewater. In July, with the success of her song “I Like It,” she became the first female rapper to see two songs hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. A few months later, she made that three songs with her featured spot on the Maroon 5 song “Girls Like You.”

When “Bodak Yellow” hit No. 1 in October of 2017, Cardi reached her first major milestone: becoming the first solo female rapper in almost 20 years to reach the top spot (Lauryn Hill hit that mark in 1998).

While she made it clear she was not with Offset anymore, Cardi hinted that divorce may not be imminent just yet.

“I don’t know, it might take time to get a divorce and I’m gonna always have a lot of love for him because he is my daughter’s father,” she said in the video.

“There you go..peace and love,” she captioned the post.

Amongst the thousands of comments on Cardi’s Instagram post, one stood out: “Y’all won.”

It was from Offset, 26, born Kiari Cephus.

As with her marriage to the Georgia rapper, Cardi kept her pregnancy a secret for months, batting away rumors that she was expecting. She revealed her baby bump during an April performance on “Saturday Night Live” that was tagged to the release of her first album, “Invasion of Privacy,” which topped the Billboard chart.
